Queensland man searches for the author of love letter penned to him 40 years ago

But if he does find the sender, will it be true love?

"She would have to be pretty good-looking to kick my blue heeler out of bed … like supermodel status," he said.

"I love my dog to bits."

Pluto

In 1930, Walt Disney was apparently inspired by it when he introduced for Mickey Mouse a canine companion named Pluto, although Disney animator Ben Sharpsteen could not confirm why the name was given.

Interpreting Tail Wags in Dogs
Lynn Buzhardt, VCA

What does a wagging tail mean?

When your dog wags his tail is he telling you that he’s happy? Not necessarily!  Canines know many variations of the “tail wag” and they all mean different things. In fact, a wag of the tail is one of the best methods of communication in the canine kingdom.

Like human infants, dogs must learn their language. Pups aren’t born knowing what a wagging tail means any more than a newborn baby understands words. But when a pup is about a month old, he recognizes the need to communicate with his mother and siblings so he picks up the lingo. The pup wags his tail to tell his littermates that he’s tired of playing or to tell his mother that he’s hungry.

The Sad, Sad Story of Laika, the Space Dog, and Her One-Way Trip into Orbit
Alice George, 11 April 2018, Smithsonian Magazine

A stray Moscow pup traveled into orbit in 1957 with one meal and only a seven-day oxygen supply.

With a pounding heart and rapid breath, Laika rode a rocket into Earth orbit, 2,000 miles above Moscow streets she knew. Overheated, cramped, frightened, and probably hungry, the space dog gave her life for her country, involuntarily fulfilling a canine suicide mission.

Sad as this tale is, the stray husky-spitz mix became a part of history as the first living creature to orbit the Earth. Over the decades, the petite pioneer has repeatedly found new life in popular culture long after her death and the fiery demise of her Soviet ship, Sputnik 2, which smashed into the Earth’s atmosphere 60 years ago this month.

A cat's eye view of the Australian outback
Shannon Corvo, 8 May 2020, ABC News Online

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-08/outback-travels-with-a-bengal-cat-and-remote-school-teacher/12196994?nw=0

Kartika is not a regular cat.

The four-year-old Bengal has a social media following and an owner with a taste for adventure.

One of her regular activities — aside from chasing ping-pong balls around the house — is travelling through the outback with secondary school teacher Lou Myers, 34.

"She likes to stick her head out the window as we're driving along, sniff the air and see what's going on," says Lou.”

The 5-kilo feline has spent much of her life travelling vast distances across Australia, to places as different from each other as Alice Springs and the bustling Adelaide CBD.

Here she is visiting the monstrous spaceship from the 2000 film Pitch Black sitting ominously in Coober Pedy's town centre, in regional South Australia.

"She likes to get out and have a look around, whether it's checking out the beach or checking out water holes in remote areas — even checking out the traffic when we're driving into a town," Lou says.

Their road trips can last days.

While Kartika and Lou are housebound, in a remote community in South Australia, at present — adhering to restrictions on travel imposed as a result of COVID-19 — when they do travel, it is in a modified SUV.

"We've got the back seats taken out so there's a double bed in the back," Lou says.

"She likes to camp in the back with me."

Kartika is secured by her lead and harness to an interior handle and has access to food and water when they're moving.

Dogs Are Doggos: An Internet Language Built Around Love For The Puppers
Jessica Boddy, 23 April 2017, NPR
https://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2017/04/23/524514526/dogs-are-doggos-an-internet-language-built-around-love-for-the-puppers

Some dogs are doggos, some are puppers, and others may even be pupperinos. There are corgos and clouds, fluffers and floofs, woofers and boofers. The chunky ones are thicc, and the thin ones are long bois. When they stick out their tongues, they're doing a mlem, a blep, a blop. They bork. They boof. Once in a while they do each other a frighten. And whether they're 10/10 or 12/10, they're all h*ckin' good boys and girls.

Are you picking up what I'm putting down? If not, you're probably not fluent in DoggoLingo, a language trend that's been gaining steam on the Internet in the past few years. The language most often accompanies a picture or a video of a dog and has spread to all major forms of social media. It might even change the way we talk out loud to our beloved canines.

DoggoLingo, sometimes referred to as doggo-speak, "seems to be quite lexical, there are a lot of distinctive words that are used," says Internet linguist Gretchen McCulloch. "It's cutesier than others, too. Doggo, woofer, pupper, pupperino, fluffer — those have all got an extra suffix on the end to make them cuter.”

The Unlikely Friendship Of A Dog And An Owl
https://www.boredpanda.com/ingo-poldi-dog-owl-friendship-tanja-brandt/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic

I wouldn’t have believed that an owl and a dog could become best friends until I saw these surprising and adorable photos by Tanja Brandt, a professional animal photographer and collage artist in Germany. Ingo the Malinois shepherd dog and Poldi, the cute owl, seem more than happy to cozy up to each other for photoshoots bathed in golden evening light.

If you like these photos, be sure to visit Brandt’s site, because Ingo has a whole lot of beautiful animal friendships, be they other Belgian shepherds or other fierce birds of prey besides Poldi. Brandt creates animal photos and collages professionally, so she seems to have a lot of cooperative models to work with!

Though these animal pictures indeed are adorable and unique, Ingo the Malinois dog and Poldi the owl aren’t the only unusual and cute animal friends out there – we have a post about all sorts of unusual animal friends!

Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of the Wizard of Oz
author ….. Michael Morpurgo
illustrator ….. Emma Chichester Clark

From master storyteller Michael Morpurgo, and illustrated in stunning colour by the award-winning Emma Chichester Clark, comes a surprising, charming and uplifting twist on The Wizard of Oz, told by a very special and unforgettable character: Dorothy's pet dog, Toto. A perfect, collectible gift for all children (and children at heart).

“I was there,” Papa Toto said, and those magic words sent shivers down my spine. It was going to be the Wizard story. “Dorothy and me were both there.”
We were all silent, snuggled up together, waiting, waiting.
Then Papa Toto began…

When a twister descends on their Kansas farm, Toto and his owner Dorothy hide in the house – only to be plucked into the air and whisked away!

Coming down with a crash in the mysterious land of Oz, the pair meet a series of extraordinary characters: a scarecrow who believes he has no brains, a tin man without a heart, and a cowardly lion who may not be as cowardly as he thinks he is.

But Toto and Dorothy are desperate to return home – after all, home is home, and home is best! So they set off with their new friends on a journey down the yellow brick road to find the only person who might be able to help them: the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

But what they find might surprise them. And on the way, all of them will learn that what they think they are missing might have been there, all along…

Beautifully illustrated throughout, this is an unforgettable telling of a classic story, and a must for every bookshelf.

Heard the joke about the dog's ball?
I won't bore you with that one, then.
Every dog loves a good joke,
even that one about the hen.
Doggo

The Dog's Ball

Dogs of the world once held a ball,
They came from near and far,
Some flew in by aeroplane,
While others rolled in by car.
But before going into the hall,
One rule of the house to book,
Each dog took off his arsehole,
And hung it on a hook.

Hardly were they seated round,
Each mother, son and sire,
When a little yellow chihuahua
Began to holla "Fire!!!"
Out dogs rushed in panic,
And didn't stop to look.
Each hound just grabbed an arsehole
From off the nearest hook.

So that's the reason why you see,
When walking down the street,
Each dog stops to swap a smell
With every dog it meets.
Reveals why many a dog
Will leave the comfort of home,
Daring to smell an arsehole,
To find if it's their own.
